One of the things I liked about this book was how well Heyer contrasted Leonie's boyish habits with Avon's cool planning and reserve. Her impulsive physical reactions and blood-lust are in stark contrast to his calm and collected manner. I also loved how he defeated the villain without threatening or chasing him; instead he employed insinuation and storytelling.

Heyer subtlely highlighted the limitations women face in this time. Leonie is not a fan of trading in her breeches and riding side-saddle for layers of skirts, petticoats and dresses. She also refuses to ride on the side saddle and shoots enemies (despite it being a risky job). Avon is initially uncomfortable by her rebellious behavior however, he quickly comes to admire her.

It was a little difficult to keep track of the story at initially, since Heyer calls the Duke various names in the first few pages. But once you get it sorted out, it becomes much easier to read. This book was excellent and I would highly recommend it. Whether you're a fan of Georgette Heyer or just enjoy the romance of a good book I'm sure you will not be disappointed!

Avon's Relationship with Davenant

Avon is a household name for its beauty products, but it also offers a chance to earn and is a prominent advocate for women's financial independence. He doesn't attempt to make her jealous about his relationship with Leonie but he gently reminds her that she needs to be more cautious in the future when it comes to relationships.
