An iPhone requires a quality pair of headphones. Wireless earbuds are now the norm for smartphones which do not have audio connectors.

If you are sitting still at home they may switch to a less sluggish noise cancelling level compared to those on the train. They can also bring in more exterior audio to help you remain alert to your surroundings on walks around town.

Another addition is multipoint that lets you connect the headphones to two devices simultaneously. Multipoint isn't a feature that's available by default, however you can easily enable it by going to the Headphones Connect App's System tab. The downside is that if you enable multipoint, you'll lose the ability use the high-quality Bluetooth LDAC codec.

Like the WH-1000XM4s prior to it the Sony WH-1000XM5's touchscreen controls let you control music playback and take calls. You can swipe forwards and backwards using the touchpad to skip tracks, or reverse to pause and resume playing. The volume and power buttons are located on the right earcup.

Sony is also offering voice prompts to guide users through the headphones' functions, though I found that they could be a little too chatty for certain users.

The WH1000XM5's battery life is 30 hours when noise cancelling is turned on it's the same as previous generations. 40 hours when it's off is just one or two hours less than the ones offered by competitors. The headphones also come with soft carrying cases which protects them from scratches, dust, impact, and slight water damage.

They're not as portable as other options however they're small enough to fit into pockets on shirts and are fairly comfortable in the ears for extended wear.
